European Ideas Network

The European Ideas Network (EIN) is an open, pan-European, think-tank process that brings together representatives of civil society, think tankers, politicians, academics, and journalists. Sponsored by the EPP-ED Group, the network was launched in 2002 to promote new thinking on the key challenges facing the countries of the European Union.

With an active membership of around 500, the network has rapidly emerged as an important meeting-point and intellectual crossroads for many European think tanks.

EIN's working groups hold several regular meetings and smaller conferences. The key important event is a large annual conference - the EIN Summer University . Normally held each September, organized by different EU member states, the Summer University is designed to publicize the research results of EIN members to the wider public, and it offers a unique forum for scientific and political participants in which EIN members can share their innovative ideas about policy.

During the spring and fall of each year, representatives of the working groups and the participating think tanks, along with the presidency and some prominent individuals of the ENP-ED Group, meet in Brussels to coordinate the activity and program of the network. EIN events are organized by the EIN Secretariat working in the EPP-ED Group.

Policy working groups

Real work in EIN is done within the framework of either the Policy Working Groups - WG, or the Taskforce - TF. Conducting research on issues of the digital economy in 2005, the agendas of the existing 12 working groups include a wide range of European and international issues:

•  WG1 - Private sector and public services
•  WG2 - Competitiveness and Innovation
•  WG3 - European Monetary Union and financial services
•  WG4 - Global Security Challenges
•  WG5 - Demographic Change and Immigration
•  WG6 - Globalization
•  WG7 - Creating Jobs in Europe
•  WG8 - Governance in Europe
•  WG9- Terrorism and Internal Security
•  WG10 - Energy-policy and Environmental Challenges
•  WG11 - Digital Economy
•  WG12 - Geographic boundaries of the EU

Each of the working groups holds meetings at least twice a year in major European cities, but a daily flow of information among the members is provided via the homepage of the network.

cooperation between european think tanks

EIN serves as a framework for a closer cooperation between the European think tanks as well. The forums for cooperation are those workgroups that were created at the 2004 Berlin Summer University with the aim of creating an opportunity for social groups and intellectual professional organizations represented by the members of the network. The participants, by their activity, can transmit the European perspective spanning different nations to the members of the European legislation that can contribute to the formation of long-term political strategies and solutions. Completing and deepening the earlier cooperation, the participating think tanks have cooperated on numerous issues since the fall of 2005. The topics include migration, integration and multiculturalism, European social models and economic reform, security, governance, and democracy.

Századvég in EIN

The Századvég Foundation was first represented at the EIN Summer University in September 2003 and has been participating in the work of the European Ideas Network ever since.

The aim of our participation in the network is to advance the formation of new answers and responses to social, economic, and international challenges ahead of the European Union and our country by widening the horizons of political decision-makers, while still considering the interests of Hungarian civil society and using our experiences and knowledge. The Foundation has participated in the workgroups of WG5 (demographic changes) and WG8 (European governance). Experts of the Foundation have participated as speakers at the workgroup meetings, have shared their professional ideas with participants numerous times, and have taken an important role in the preparation of the final documents summarizing the professional opinion of the workgroups.
